Default How do you control the starting on a Big block??

I just installed my new 16 HP and was wondering what you guys are doing about the starting and gear shifting??

Do you make it start with the gas pedel like a stock one? do you idle it low enuff to shift it while it is running? Do you leave the belt loose enuff were it will not pull in gear while idling?

I installed a comet drive and a 28 degree driven.

I would like to be able to just crank the engine in nutreul and shift reverse and forward while it is running ... if possible.

How much slack should the belt have while not running??

Thanks for the help Kerry

I believe most guys with "big" engines have them set up where they run all the time. My vtwin cart was set up from the factory with the switch on the pedal but I changed it so it would run all the time.
Your drive clutch is the key to having it idle and shift, it will need to be adjusted so it engages at a higher rpm. shouldn't be a problem with a comet, most of them are adjustable somehow. Comet should be able to help you with that.

I will have to play around with it, I added a wider belt from a snowmobile and put a spacer in the driven clutch. I will need to look at the comet and see if I can make it work.

How loose are the belts with engine not running? Can you push it up and down a 1" 2"or 3" or is it tight with no slack?
