Default time line question

My cart is a J10-000201 listed in the timeline sticky as a 1979. Some parts listed such as "•Carburetor Rebuild Kit for 1978-1981" states a 1978 model year. When did Yamaha start making/selling these carts? Does this serial number represent production number?
