G2 lift - spindle removal

**UPDATE** - please ignore - I dug some more and found my answers! thanks.

I just started my G2 project - trying to install a lift and the instructions are poor for a newbie (no pictures either!)

I am afraid to start trying to remove things with force with out clarifying how to do it correctly so here are my questions based on this diagram

the instruction says to "remove the spindle"

1. is the spindle the steering knuckle or the part marked "12,27 pin, steering knuckle" (I even laugh at myself for asking that one but want to be sure)

2. how do I remove it? I see posts about using a punching it out but their appears to be small horizontal pins (15 and 16) are those the inner and outer pins I see posts about - will punching those release the big pin? and will they both come out at once - or the inner or outer first?

that makes sense to me - but it's been 20 years since I rebuilt/restored a car and I don't remember much about the suspension work other than repacking the bearings.

Steering knockle- we call the king pin, and I call the other 2, roll pins.
yes, drive out the 2 roll pins, small one first, then the larger one.
Then I believe, the king pin drives out from the bottom to the top, work gently on this, it may be from the top down. Did this a year ago, and already cant remember. But make sure how it goes together on the new parts, king pin will drop right in, going one way or the other (from the top down, or from the bottom up)
Clean the king pin up with emery cloth, if it's gulled, replace.
Re assemble with "never seize" through the spindle and grease in the bushings, and never seize the roll pins.

yep thanks very much! boy I have been learning the past 2 days...

I got the passenger king pin out fine...

SOL on drivers side - not sure if I used a too large of a punch but both roll pins started coming out at once but at a different rate...long story short, I got the inner pin out with WD and vice grips the outer pin is stuck halfway out and I mean really stuck - my punch broke in side and I can't even drill it out with a titanium bit.

first time in a very long time I think the "machine" is going to win...since I am replacing the A frame anyway, going to replace the spindle too and new king pin...

now if I can just figure out how to get the hub off! (haven't tried yet, decided to crack a cold beer first)

Work with it. Maybe you can still get the roll pin out. get a good punch, soak roll pin in wd40, over nite and try to work it back and forth a bit, then drive it out with the broken punch still in it. It may work, beats buying parts before you need them. Then you can spend the money on go fast parts.

thanks...I tried exactly all that and it will not budge.

I got the hub off and will eat the $40 for a new spindle...it gets to a point where it's just not worth fighting...agh...live and learn - the punch I used for the inner pin was slightly too large.

no worries - installing the rest of the lift tonight - then wait for the spindle...my new wheels got delayed so the whole thing wont be back together till end of next week...

that will give me time to clean everything.

then I will tackle the upholstery and paint

as for "go fast"...well I will take that one step at a time...I should check the compression and timing but just cleaning the plug got rid of the few backfires...I tired to tighten the governor screw but it ran way too hot so I backed it off...

Crazy, take all the fan shrouding off the motor to look for grass and mud stopping air flow. Take out the motor to check for broken motor mounts, torque cable and anything else might seem inapropreate or out of order. Check to make sure all the air cleaner parts are in the air cleaner, and that the lid is sealed with no air leaks (it may be running lean). That will make it run hot.
Then when you get it all back together you should have a good running cart that runs with no problems. Also read the sight(yamaha section) all the way to the end. You will learn much and be able to perform maintainance needed.
What lift are you putting on?

sorry for the late reply, work is crazy busy and I had some travel...


On the engine/fan cleaning - thanks! I will do that! I can't take the motor out to check the mounts (I don't have a lift) but I will get under there and inspect - I know the air filter is not sealed well - all the rubber straps have desinigrated...I fix that right away.

I have a few days before my new spindle get here so I am cleaning the frame and everything this weekend.

LMAO at the lift kit! leave it to me a noob to believe that when they say "no welding required" !!! actually not sure if it's the kit or maybe this cart has been seriously knocked around - in it's previous life it was a farm cart...dirt and grass everywhere... (and it wasn't even lifted)

the kit I got was a 7 inch lift for my G2 like this one

no idea if I got ripped off (please don't tell me if I did) but after it finally coming together...long story short, after I decided to give up on the spindle (and buy a new one, going to replace the king bushings on both sides too - old ones are shot)

then I fight to remove the A arms and lol I ended up having to cut the bolts of the drivers side to get the arm out! it was very frustrating but quite a victory when it finally came out - this is a project cart for me and my son (who is 9) ....

THEN I try to place the new arms and they don't fit! the front bracket on the frame somehow (either by cart accident or by bad kit design) - I was thinking now that this little cart is going to beat me into the ground...lol...

anyway, I find a guy on craigs list (always a little risking) that has welding gear on his truck and does some side work in the evenings - I sent him pictures and he came out and cut off and reattached the bracket. Very reasonable at about $60. He even showed my son how to do some practice welds - and he thought that was the coolest thing in the world! lol


so the arms are in - then with a little help from my husband (yes I am a girl) we managed to jack the cart up high enough (I need a GOOD floor jack but don't want to spend the $$ right now) - I want more cart parts :D

the front and rear kit is installed, rear wheels are on - my kids think it's awesome and have dubbed it the "Monster Cart" - waiting on spindle and king pin kit (comes tuesday) to finish the front end...

so now I am cleaning...

next..upolstery, steering wheel, light kit, rear seat kit (found one for this model but it's ~$350 and I REALLY want to understand the installation very well so I know what I am getting in to)

and of course...paint - I have sprayed before - but might stick to all the prep and send the parts to a shop..

You Go Girl!! Good Job! Keep at it, your gonna make a "Monster Cart" out of it yet. I hope you "never seized" the bolts in the suspension bushings or for that matter just about all the bolts you removed and reinstalled on that thing. I had the same problem with the frozen bolt in the front sus. had to cut out, but I used a jakes lift, and it was a perfact fit to reasemble.

Any problems that you encounter, just post on here, these people love to help, and we love seeing pictures of your progress!
Check for the presence of the little torque cable mounted on the front driver side motor mount. These are often missing or broken and make for poor performance of the cars movement (allowing motor to pull back toward the rear axle when driving making belt to loose).

awesome thanks! I know my belt is loose - not sure of the spec though - I will look for the cable...not sure what top speed is supposed to be (even with govenor) but I suspect something is up - it only puts around 10mph maybe a bit faster but not much.

Once I get the wheels back on I will post pics...body is still in rough shape but I will post progress as I go along.

Wow you were right on the money there...it's still there but very loose!
