Well, I am only a newbie so take what I say with a grain of salt, but if you hit the starter with a rubber hammer and it started turning over, that would tell me that the brushes might be bad in the starter. No?

The s/g is working great! The battery is reading 14.2 at 1st and goes up to 14.8 at full throttle.
I changed the brushes too. I think it probably needed it since the old brushes were less than half the length of the new ones.
I ordered a full light set last night and I will get new brakes tomorrow. New seat covers by the end of the week and I'll have $900 in the whole sh-bang.
