There is probably a metal retaining ring inside the tank that the screws go into. Make sure that doesn't fall in when you take the screws out.

Good point thanks for the tip. I would like to use machine screws, nuts and washers to re-fasten that puppy to the tank but I don't think my sausage fingers could get in there and get to the furthest ones away.......

Take one screw out and match it to a long one to use as a handle on the inner ring.
