If you have lifted the rear up and applied go go pedal with the brakes applied to check for a spinning axle and that all checks out good. Do you have one of those flexible magnets you could poke into the differential through the plug. You might have a bearing issue or a gear issue but before you tear it all apart there is more checking we can do.

I have a 1998, and from your sig, you have a 1981?

I tore my rear end apart and replaced all bearings, seals and freeze plugs. It could have been done in a day, but I probably took two. My wheel bearings were grinding, so once I knew I had to replace them, why wouldn't I want to replace every other bearing, seal, and oil, when they were 14 years old?

FWIW,

The new bearings seemed to tighten up some slop in the gears and between that and new oil, my buggy is now quieter. Isn't that why we choose sparkies over gassers?

I startle way to many old women as I drive around. Thus why I play my radio. I sure would hate to be responsible for giving an old gal a heart attack.

I have blue wig-wags and a siren, and enjoy sneaking up on people.

In any event, both of us can control when people hear us. My rear-end used to groan when going around corners, and it's much quieter now.

If the axles are spinning while the brakes are applied you have stripped axles. Carts Unlimited sells a type of hub to fix the problem.
