96DCS Goes Forward in both reverse and Forward
Hello, New to the forum, just picked up a 96 EZ GO Electric cart, has the tow/run switch, batterys are all at 6 or more volts, problem is, is that it is very slow and will go forward in both forward, and reverse, any ideas? Is my curtiss controller going out??

Re: 96DCS Goes Forward in both reverse and Forward
Welcome to BGW!
Batteries first: At 6V, a 6V battery is only 50% charged. A fully charged 6V battery reads 6.37V Attached is a Voltage vs State of Charge chart. (Note: The voltages given are taken after the batteries have been idle for 12 hours.) Also, lead-acid batteries have no memory and do not need to be discharged before recharging. In fact, they should be recharged after each use, and the higher you keep their average State of Charge, the longer their lifespan. To learn how to break in new batteries and take care of them from cradle to grave, read everything with the word "Battery" on this website: http://www.cartsunlimited.net/Batter...n_Methods.html Cart only goes forward next: Getting the motor to spin in the opposite direction is accomplished by changing the relative direction of current flow between the motor's armature windings and field (aka stator) windings. In a DCS or PDS cart, the direction the current flows in the field windings is switched internally by the controller. The stock DCS controller (Curtis 1206SX) is notoriously susceptible to damage caused by low voltage and failing to reverse the field winding is one of the symptoms. The controller is told to go into reverse bay applying battery pack voltage to Pin-4 of the 10 pin connector on top of controller. If Pin-4 has B+ on it when F/R control is in R and the cart goes forward, the controller is bad. If Pin-4 doesn't have B+ on it, the F/R switch is bad. Controller: If controller is bad, DO NOT replace it with a stock DCS controller, get an aftermarket one that doesn't have the low voltage susceptibility. With something like an Alltrax DCX400(DCS), you will not only get reliability, you'll gain speed and torque also. |

Re: 96DCS Goes Forward in both reverse and Forward
This is a fairly common DCS controller failure. The batteries must be replaced if they are not providing 36 volts plus. Low voltage is a common DCS controller killer. The stock controller has no low voltage protection. Often when the batteries get low the higher amperage draw creates enough heat to cook the control.
You can go with something like Pkg 505 (go here > Carts Unlimited Upgrade Pkgs) and upgrade the cables to get about 35% more torque and about 20mph on the flats. |
