please help
I have a Yamaha G9 gas, It ran fine when I bought it. This is what has happened: I installed a lift kit , tires ect, new light kit. I took it out for a drive and it just quit running. it blew the inline fuse, when I replaced it it ran for a few min. then quit. I put another fuse in and it would just turn over and back fire. I have traced every wire and have good connections. The one thing I did do wrong is ground the lights to the frame (which I have since corrected). In messing with the wiring I got it to start up but it would not shut off. I cut the brown wire from the voltage reg and it now runs right, except the fact it is not charging. I'm unsure if it ever was charging in the first place. Does it sound like I need to do- check something else before I get a new generator and or voltage regulator? If anyone can shed a little light on any of this that would be great. Thanks

Having a similar issue. Did you get this figured out or does anyone have any advice? Any description of how the VR is supposed to work?

Re: please help
If you grounded anything to the frame, that is likely the problem. If a previous owner grounded anything to the frame, that is likely the problem. All grounds have to ground to the battery, (or to the ground lug on the starter). All grounds have to be clean and tight for the car to run well. The ignition runs on an open/closed ground. If there is a loose or corroded ground connection anywhere, it can cause problems.
Battery terminals have to be clean and tight as well. |

Re: please help
Just read that I'm wrong about a frame ground on a G9. Certain yr's have the frame grounded. But I'd still ground any add on accessories like lights and radios back to the battery. Thanks Block for enlightening me!! My G8 has no frame ground.
Tommy, any of yours had a frame ground? |

Re: please help
It ended up being the positive wire that is clipped into 5 other positive wires. The clip was not making a good connection. I ended up taking all the wires out of the wire loom and using a multi meter tracked down what was wrong. Good luck

Re: please help
My G9 will not run the lights if my ground falls off the frame, I found that out. They light but not enough to drive at night. You can imagine what happened as I had to get the cart back home lol. Yes I held the wire on metal to get home.

Re: please help
Do not ground the lights to the frame, ground them directly to the battery. I made the same mistake.
