Default Re: Yamaha G2 Build / Questions

I have a basically stock 420 clone in my Yamaha G1 with 11" lift and 25" tires. With 4 grown adults (700lbs.) I cruise around on vacation anywhere between 25-30mph.

The clone motor will have double the torque that the stock yamaha setup does. What I am getting at is that I haven't run into a situation where I didn't have enough torque. Granted, I am not climbing any long steep hills.

you can also do some work to the secondary clutch to help with the hill climb. At the end of the day, I would buy a small trailer to pull the extra equipment. Like 89 said, the suspensions just aren't built to carry that much weight, until you spruce it up.

You have a pretty good idea of "What" you need it for, just build it the way you want.

The lift won't help you any for towing/hauling unless you need bigger tires for ground clearance. The stock suspension and frame is designed to handle about 600lbs of cargo max. If you are loading it up that much, you will exceed the limits of the cart as a whole, and it will be unsafe. I've seen spindles and a arm's crack. At speed that could get ugly. And with adults aboard, the cart will be top heavy and rear heavy. That spells roll over. I've seen it happen. Pretty much it's either haul the people safely OR haul the gear safely, not both. No one will be having fun with road rash and broken wrists. Been there done that. Just sayin.....

Marathon said it right, you need a little trailer to carry the gear. A trailer can be obtained/made pretty cheaply and can carry a lot of weight. I made a little trailer with some scrap, use it to tow the kids around on, like a hay ride type thing. It's a steel frame with a 3/4" all thread axle with pressure washer wheels on it. I've had three adults on it before.....did very well. If you built a trailer, you can make it to spec to carry all your gear. It could be just an open trailer with sides, or you could make cargo holds/compartments, etc. It would carry 500lbs plus easily and still weight less than 100 lbs.

Spend the money on the "shoes" and the "clone". The V Twin is a heck of a power plant, but the clone will do what you need. Either would be fine.

Also to consider is clutching. Invest in a new performance clutch setup and you will be super happy. I've seen a lot of guys here do all the other stuff, but left the clutches stock. Once you go with good driveline parts, you'll understand.

Thanks for all the advise guys. One thing I know for sure around here or any of the other forums I frequent is you all make it easy to spend some coin! I'll start looking/scheming a trailer set up. I won't rock anything unsafe. Period. Doing dumb **** that will only hurt me is one thing. Hurting someone else is not an option.

Maybe something like this?

Thanks slo. I ordered the comet 780 drive clutch. Do I need to do more than that? I want the performance done before I work on the looks.all show and no go makes for a bad day. No show and all go makes for big smiles and lots of amazement.

That looks awesome! What motor are you running? What was the biggest difference you noticed in the clutch?

Running a 30 hp vanguard, 8;1 gears, runs around 50 mph. The cluch ia very smooth and engages at 1600 rpm.

With the stock gears you'll be more in the 35 mph range, plus or minus depending upon your max rpm. 35 in a cart is fast. 50 in a cart is way fast. The bad thing in a cart, bigger tires and taller gears will sacrifice low end pulling power. With the Vtwin it may not matter though.

As far as the clutches go, I'd get your secondary replaced also with a new/not worn out Plowman's secondary kit. Best bang for the buck for pulling power. If you do that, keep the stock spring and see if it suits your needs. With the bigger springs they tend to rev a little high before it shifts out.

New clutches, new belt, new engine.....you'll be VERY happy with the results. After that, do your wheels/tires and paint.....call it done!

BTW.....that trailer is sick! You may be able to build one for 1/3 of that price, maybe not with aluminum, but painted steel or wood sides. Money well spent.

Check Harbor Freight, they have a similar trailer for a hundred bucks or so. No suspension . But works fine at low speed.

That is a very very nice car Kawasaki!! Nice job!!
