2001 club car questions from a new guy

I'm considering purchasing a cart from my brother in law, 2001 club car. He said he changed the "transmission" to make it go faster, any clue what this means? I'm thinking a shorter final gear perhaps? Anyway he's owned the cart for years and it's in great shape, new batteries also. 1000$ seems like a real good deal to me, that's what they offered him on trade. Anyway my use for the cart will be more off-road, for around the farm and hunting. Is the transmission mod a detriment to possibly running larger tires? Also I've read here some mention certain year model club cars as having "complicated" electricals? Is the 2001 model considered ok? Any info shared with me is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

We need the serial number of the cart. Number should be near the GO pedal.
He may be referring to the rear end gears. They can be changed to make it go faster or to give it more toque.

Thanks mrgolf, that's the only thing I could guess is it's the gearing he changed. Hopefully for more torque but I'm thinking it's for top end as he has small tires on it. If it's the top end gear would it still work with 22" tires? I'll try to get the serial number in the next couple days, it's at his house but I'll swing by and check it out. Maybe not a 2001 I dunno? Serial number is A9646-xxxxxx. It says 48 volt on the side, and has the lever F/R switch. Not sure what all that tells me though? I guess it's a '96 model?

It's got 10" wheels too, but the tires are low profile types. I'll be changing those hopefully. ;)

Ok good deal. Guess I should change the thread title since it's a '96..So does anyone have any idea if the high speed gears will be a problem with my plans for bigger tires?

It's hard to say for sure. Sounds like you know the cart well. Have you test drove it up hill? If there is an extreme difference from up hill compared to flat ground you know the torque isn't good and you have your answer.

Thanks Physcoflip, I haven't driven it lately but I will try. Not many hills in their neighborhood though. Maybe I can find a couple out on the golf course. If it does seem to have low torque, would a torque motor replacement be an easy fix? Or would stock gears be better?

One more question, I think I've read just enough to confuse myself. :)
Is the 1996 48v series a resistor or controller cart?
