Default Another Stuck Motor

They say you live and learn and today was a pleasant education. I had a 2002 Precedent brought to me that was grinding and growling terrible. I first checked axle bearings and ruled those out. It was coming from center drive or motor. The additional symptom of dropping power and going in to limp home mode made me suspect motor ( commutator ) bearing. It is an IQ cart with GE motor and the snap in speed sensor. When I popped out the sensor about a teaspoon full of ground dust fell out. That pretty much confirmed motor bearing. Then the nightmare began. The motor was as seized as I have ever seen. Absolutely was NOT coming off. The cart has been subjected to South Carolina coastal SALT ENVIRONMENT with a capital S . Shock stems were rusted beyond coming off and U-bolts weren't much better, so pulling the whole rear end was not looking like a happy plan. I was ready to tell the owner to sell it for salvage but this morning an idea came to me. Jack it up, put it on jack stands and put a bearing in it with the motor stuck in place. I learned today that it CAN BE DONE. I took the end cap off of the motor and the two screws holding the bearing retainer so as to not damage the rest of the motor and with the help of a pry bar and an air hammer was able to get the bad ( very bad ) bearing off of it and replace it with new. Getting the screws back in the retainer reassembling was a trick, but it's all back together and running quiet as a mouse. I busted the sensor magnet in the doing but thats a small thing. Got one ordered from Raleigh and went ahead and upgraded to "speed" magnet instead of replacing with stock. Also putting a new speed sensor. It had never occurred to me that what I can repair standing at the work bench that I could also repair laying on my back, though be it with more difficulty. Didn't have to scrap the cart or buy a rear end and motor though. Made me want to kick back with a tall cold Budweiser !

The motor splines are still solidly stuck to the input shaft, but with a new bearing and good brushes it will be for years to come .... and it doesn't matter.

I've had them where I beat them all to pieces with a sledge hammer to get them off, but the best way is to remove one stick is to remove the rear end and put the nuts back on the wheel threads to protect them, then pick up the rear end and drop it on the hub with motor facing downward, and it will usually turn loose after a couple of drops.
