2008 E-Z-GO RXV - Increase Max RPM and/or Torque
I recently bought my first cart, an '08 RXV. Realised the ACD motor controller had a CAN Interface. As a trial, over the weekend I used a microcontroller to grab the Voltage & RPM from the controller and display them on a LCD. Also used these values to approximate batt % and speed.
Its all working good and now I have some confidence with how the CAN protocol works. Im thinking of upping the max RPM and/or Torque values to get a little extra speed (top speed of 19 vs current 15 MPH). Could anyone tell me how high you can go without causing undue strain to the electrics or mechanics of the system. Also if anyone has any dire warnings or tales of woe related to doing this Im all ears. |

Re: 2008 E-Z-GO RXV - Increase Max RPM and/or Torque
I don't have an RXV, but lots of other members do! I would be quit interested in your set up and results interfacing with the CAN protocol on the RXV, I am interested in getting one in the future.
From what I have read so far there should be quite a bit to gain on the drive system. Share your setup so we all can learn! |

Re: 2008 E-Z-GO RXV - Increase Max RPM and/or Torque
I have a 2011 with a lift and 23" tires. I had mine programmed to high/fast. It went from 21-22mph to 27-28mph wot. I will hardly ever go that fast but its nice to know I can. I was really after the torqe gain and it was a definite improvement over the prior setting.

If your top speed is 15 mph, and assuming everything else is stock, there is one more setting in the program that will get you to 19. Hand held programmers that the dealers have will do that. As you increase speed, the motor brake and suspension become the weak links. I too have 23" tires and mine runs ~27 mph with no issues. No idea how much more you could safely squeeze out of it. One of us on here needs to either design some front disks or modify a set of 2 five brakes to go on these.
I'm also very interested in what you come up with, but for different reasons. I have a 2 five speedo that I want to be able to calibrate. It maxes out at 20 mph because it is reading motor rpm. Please keep us updated. |

Re: 2008 E-Z-GO RXV - Increase Max RPM and/or Torque
Hi RXV tech here..
Grassflats is correct. Dealer or shop with handheld can set speed up to 19.5mph(assuming stock tires) With tires that fit under un-lifted cart, that yields 22-23mph. On RXV's , the motor controller is limited to @250amps (i do not know exact figures) This limits torque. The other limit to torque is the controller programming. As RXV's were designed as GOLF carts, the torque was limited to prevent wheel spin on grass.(otherwise greens keepers would have said ugly things about Mr. Ez-Go and his mother) Acceleration has 3 settings high medium and low. Just a warning on RXV's... The brake on the end of the motor is a PARKING/EMERGENCY brake. It is not used to slow or stop the cart in normal driving. All normal brake operation is performed by the MOTOR. Changing tire size or gear ratios to achieve speeds over 25 mph greatly decreases the motors braking ability and stresses motor and controller. Overspeed braking also brings the "burn off" resister into play much more often. For safety we (our shop) does not recommend lifting RXV's. The front suspension is coil over shocks and can allow excessive body roll at high speed when cart is lifted. Roll over is a very real danger at speed. Recommendations ...... 1) dont lift cart 2) get larger, low profile tires (that fit on un lifted cart) 3) set controller to 19.5mph(actual speed 22-24mph) 4) set acceleration to high. |

Did you ever go further with this? I'd be interested to see how you communicated with the controller. Are you willing to share?

Re: 2008 E-Z-GO RXV - Increase Max RPM and/or Torque
Modification of my previous post..
We do lift RXV's but we caution about the higher center of gravity. The mad jax lift which replaces the coil over suspension seems more stable and does not "body roll" as bad. The lifted carts w/larger tires can approach 27mph. We cannot set carts to that speed due to liability issues. We have "test driven" carts at higher than 25mph , we were not comfortable with RXV's at that speed with stock coil over suspension... they did NOT feel safe. |

I'd love to know if this was ever documented!
