Golf cart fuse?
I am ordering a new sr 48500 controller and they suggested I get a 400 amp fuse.
Do I really need a fuse on my battery pack? What does it protect against? Thanks |

Re: Golf cart fuse?
A fire. And if you want any controller warranty at all it's mandatory.

Re: Golf cart fuse?
Is it primarily a protection while charging?

Re: Golf cart fuse?
Charging isn't the concern so much as shorting something out.
I know it feels counter-productive to put in the biggest, fattest cables possible and then squeeze all that power through an itty-bitty fuse... But it's the best/safest way. |

Re: Golf cart fuse?
Nope, not a protection while charging, that charger can't blow a big 400a fuse. It's just insurance if the whole system fails. Like a huge short. That 400a fuse can deliver much more than 400a, but for brief periods. It's a "slow blow" fuse. If you look up that fuses "profile", you can understand that it can actually deliver even 800a before it blows. Delivering "400a for a pre-determied amount of time", is what that fuse is all about. Even a 800 amp controller would likely be fine with that fuse, because it only delivers those big amp numbers for a second or two, and that fuse takes longer than "a second or two" to reach it's popping point. It's there to prevent fire, not to save the controller, or your other parts.
