The motor heating up is normal during heavy use, which will heat up the motor brake housing. The motor brake itself should not heat up from being on. It will get warm, but not hot. It it gets hot, something is wrong. Bad motor brake coil or maybe low voltage. If your battery voltage gets low due to problem battery cells, then the motor brake can start dragging, heating up the brake disc. It powers up to pull in to release ,so you can drive while 48V is applied. It sets the parking brake when at 0V when not driving.

All motor brake will get warm during operation. During operation is when it is powered up, and it is bolted to the end of a giant heat generator.
