Sticky G16 Brake Pedal
I've got a sticky brake pedal in my '96 G16 gas (it goes down but won't return on its own). I think the problem lies in the big spring on the base of the pedal - from what I can see, it is doing nothing right now (it was rusted in place when I pryed, poked and dosed it with WD40 - I'm thinking its dead). I've looked for online parts suppliers but no one seems to handle run-of-the-mill parts like this - any suggestions?

Re: Sticky G16 Brake Pedal
I like to have a part number when making phone inquiries - saves both ends a lot of grief but the link on this site for the Yamaha parts manual doesn't seem to pull up the manual. I'm sure the spring is something that can be matched up if I pull it off and take it into a bike shop or a decent hardware store. Right now I've got a trusty bungee cord stretched through to the back bumper providing spring-back but its kind-of a Mickey Mouse short-term fix.

Your part number led me to this excellent site with all the Yamaha cart parts catalogs online:

Re: Sticky G16 Brake Pedal
Clean it with pressure washer from the top lift carpet & remove the floor cover
Wait till dry then apply some good lube from an auto parts dealer used something mechanics use Then work it back & fort WD40 is water based not the greatest lubricant You can also unhook the brake cable & see if one of them is not stuck Brakes cables are not that expensive You can also take the pedal apart probably the bushing as rust built in Clean it good re install it, I never had to replace one yet. Most of my clients leave there cart outside in the snow all winter for 5 months Good luck |

Re: Sticky G16 Brake Pedal
I've run into this several times, I used to think it was a poor design area but then you don't have mud on a golf course where they were designed to be used.
You need to remove the pivot bolt, might even have to cut or beat it out. Bushing are probably shot and bolt rusted beyond repair, You need these from Hardware store: 1/2 bolt to replace the stock bolt. 2 - 1/2" id X 3/4" od o-rings 2 - 1/2" id X 3/4" od X 1" long bronze bushings 1 - right angle grease fitting I got this idea from a big cabinet caster so if you can get an old one the right size you won't have to make the bolt. Here's what I do: 1) Remove the pedal from the cart, drill the bushing(s) out then drill pedal assy with a 3/4" drill bit. 2) Drill the frame where the pedal mounts with a 1/2" bit. 3) Drill 1/8" hole down center of new bolt, then through the side in the middle of the pivot area. 4) drill and tap the head for the right angle grease fitting. 5) install the bushings in the pedal assy. 1/8" deeper than the edge. this makes a pocket for the o-ring. 6) reassemble and give couple shots of grease every time you service it. |
