Default Yamaha G2, G9 Valve adjustment Question, TDC

I was wanting to adjust the valves on this golf cart, I know how to adjust the valves but I was wondering if someone could tell me how to get the engine TDC in idiots terminology , ive adjusted valves on my 4 wheeler before but i have a clymers manual and it told how to get the engine tdc in very simple way there was a mark you looked at while pulling it with the pull start. But if someone that has done this before could let me know it would be greatly appreciated, i think i could take the spark plug out and turn the engine over until the piston is near the top but i think there is something else to it

Hello Im not 100% sure but cant you take the spark plug out and use a pen or pencil to put in the spark plug hole.Once you have the pencil in the spark plug hole turn the motor by hand and when the piston is TDC your pencil will be sticking all the way out of the hole.

Yes, it has to be on the compression stroke. Turn the motor over by hand with your thumb over the spark plug hole, when you feel compression slipping past your thumb, is compression stroke. them put screw driver in plug hole and get piston to top. Then looking at valve/rockers, they should both be closed and the rockers loose. Then adjust to .004 on both!
Good luck Mike

Thanks for the responses, ... It should be pretty much pushing my thumb off the spark plug hole? right?

Is this the procedure for a G16 also?

Sometimes I don't reply to post's because other members did shuch a good job All the posts were great advice. The only thing I could add, after adjustment turn the engine over several times and check the setting before installing the valve cover. I have seen a sticky valve before.

I only have one last question, when you say turn the engine over by hand, do you just turn the starter/generator belt to make the engine turn, or do it some other way?

With the spark plug out, it should be easy to turn over by turning the primary/engine clutch. Don't stop asking questions.

Everybodys input was good,I just wouldn't use a pencil, could break off lead or eracer in hole, and then you gotta go chase it. And use screw driver with caution, don't want to bind it in hole when piston is all the way to the bottom. Don't put screw driv. in till piston is close to top,or use flash light and eye ball it to the top is what I try ta do.
