Anyone running a Kohler in a Yamaha?
I have a 98 G16. I am planning on upgrading the motor. I was going to go with a 23 vanguard. But I think I can get a 27 Kohler pretty cheap. Is anyone running a Kohler? Im assuming that installation will be about the same as the vanguard. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Re: Anyone running a Kohler in a Yamaha?
The thing to look at is what rpm will it run up to, once the clutches shift all the way your rpm makes your top speed. The Kaw & Vangard can hit 5K no problem stock. The honda needs a high rev kit, the vangard 18/20 seems to run the best stock with a rev kit that is 100 and change and can hit 5K+, last I knew it was fastest top speed. It has a shorter stroke or something so it winds up the most. Now if you mod the engine then none of this applies. I know they race the kohlers too so you can get mod parts for them, I don't know what rpm they will run without mods you need to find that out. Some engines you will toss a pushrod much over 3600rpm they are rated for. If you want power and don't care about going faster than your stock engine with no governor, then you have nothing to worry about but most want more speed. Some high rev kits are pushrods, some valve springs, etc., but also it depends on what cam is in there some don't want to rev even if they will not break.

Re: Anyone running a Kohler in a Yamaha?
Thanks. I'm not sure if the Kohler is going to come through for sure. I looked them up and from what Ive seen, they cost nearly twice what the vanny costs. The one I was told about needs a crank anyway so it may be a good time (if he does sell it) to mod it. I'll definetly read up on them a little bit just in case. I appreciate the input. I'll post more when I get started on this "time consuming project". Im sure I'll run into something along the way that stumps me!

Re: Anyone running a Kohler in a Yamaha?
They do race them someplace, if you search the net you will find it. I'm sure a rev kit and maybe a cam and springs would wake one up. You just don't want to rev an engine too high looking for speed if it can't take it. Every Kohler I've run had great low and midrange torque. I don't know what rpm they can do stock or what mods they need to rev higher....if you want to go faster that is. Otherwise I imagine it would work as well as most others. I was told the clone can do 5K stock with a good flowing exhaust and intake with no mods, just jetting. Just put a 16hp in it was $380 shipped but not the easiest to install. Its in the clone specs thread here.
