My batteries have bolt through posts, so over-tightening is no longer a major concern for me, but when I had stud type battery terminals, I used a 1/4" drive screwdriver handle, a 1/4" drive to 3/8" drive adapter and a 3/8" drive 9/16" socket.

Another advantage of that combination was the fact the length of the exposed metal was shorter than the distance between + and - terminals that had one or more batteries between them.

That's how I do mine, but may be difficult with two in the bag-well. I've never used a torque wrench on anything outside an internal combustion engine, besides the brake hub.
