Anyone tried converting to 4wd?
Anyone got a extra motor and axle and tried to make a cart 4wd? Is it possible? I have the stuff to do it and just looking to see if anyone has tried it

Re: Anyone tried converting to 4wd?
I have been thinking about the same idea using a Gem axle for the front to allow for steering. I would think the gear ratios would need to be mached or the cart would drive funky in 4wd mode. Why not gem axles front and rear for fully independent suspension? You would need the batteries to be maximum capacity available or range would severely suffer. I think 2 motor controllers would be needed.

Re: Anyone tried converting to 4wd?
Yep, easy, all controllers have a power-up wire, To be able to do it this way, you would need 2 controllers, but i cant see any other way anyhow. Most controllers have a feature called "High pedal disable", which means it wont activate if it is turned on while the pedal is pressed. This means it is not truly "on the fly", you would have to release the gas pedal for the front controller to start.

Re: Anyone tried converting to 4wd?
Some Bad boy Buggies were 4x4 and they used separate motors/controllers for front and rear. Occasionally a 4x4 front axle shows up for sale used. That would be the most straight forward conversion since BBB used many ezgo components including frame.
Another way is atv components. You needs lots of fabrication skills for that. Lastly is buying a complete golf cart 4x4 conversion kit. Pricy but is a bolt on ($3100) and gets you a 2 speed rear axle. They are a site sponsor. http://www.imaginativemfg.com/imaginativemfg6_004.htm |

Re: Anyone tried converting to 4wd?
Gear-Ratio and tire size must match(if you run different size tires,gear-calculations can be used to figure gearing for each axle). If they aren't matched, you will have an awful hopping, and parts will be damaged. The Atv-conversion is nice, since there are a lot of options.Early Polaris had a CVT-drive to the trans, with Lo,Hi,Nuetral, and Reverse on a stick-shift,and chain-drive to both axles.Honda,Suzuki, and Kawasaki use a lot of shaft-drives.with various engagement options for the front-axles(electric,cable,etc...)Hope this helps.
