G1 loses spark
Hope someone on here can point me in the right direction.
My G1 will run for 600 feet or so, then it loses spark. If you let it sit for a half hour, it will start again, sometimes you have to let it sit over night. Then it will do the same thing all over again, 600 feet then die. This is pretty repeatable and has been going on for a month or so. I have confirmed, no spark at the plug. As I took these readings, I reconnected and confirmed still no spark. Readings were also right at the connections. What I have checked so far: Magneto (pulsar) 15 ohms, (charge coil) 358 ohms. Ignition (primary) 1.4 ohms, (secondary) 11,500 ohms. Is the 11.5K too high? Looks like my next steps are to verify the same ohms at the CDI unit. So I still have the remainder of the wiring, the CDI unit, stop switch and main switch to rule out. Am I going about this right? Any help is welcome. Thanks, Rick |

Re: G1 loses spark
I would guess the coil, but just a guess. I say that because it sounds like heat failure and those do that, other than a spark plug I assume you already tried a new one. See the stickies post above about making your own cdi box for a G1. You could try freezing the coil and running it, if its an option just to see if it changed.
Also look at other G1 threads there are a lot of them that cover most issues. |

Re: G1 loses spark
Sho,
Thanks. I was thinking along the same lines as I have had coils on our race cars act the same exact way, and an ignition box once. I do have a spare CDI for it. I am going to swap that out today. Yes, I did verify the spark plug already. Sooner or later I'll nail it down. Just hope its sooner!! |

Re: G1 loses spark
GOT IT!!!
Figured I would start from scratch rechecking every wire and connection. I hooked up my VOM meter and started wiggling every wire. I found a small break in the wire on the ignition coil. Which of course ohm'd out good the last three times I checked it. Err, I hate chasing wire problems. Anyway new coil is on the way. The pic shows after I had tugged and twisted the wire a few times. Originally you couldnt see the break in the insulation. Rick |

Re: G1 loses spark
Awesome! Pretty sneaky place to fail, hope it runs out good for you now. Cart time is quality time lol. I'm waiting on a spring for my clutch to see if mine runs better.

Re: G1 loses spark
any ideas why I am getting extra sparks at bad timing ?
my g-1 starts but has random knock like events in both forward and reverse strong enuff to stop the motor when cranking seams like about the same rotation BTDC both ways ! but random I donot think it is a true knock but a random spark as it does that cold |

Re: G1 loses spark
I would check more wires maybe a bad ground someplace, old yami are notorious for wiring issues......before I bought more parts.
