1993 Marathon sluggish off of pavement

Hello.
New to the forum here and didn't see anything for this problem. If there is something already on here, I apologize and if so can you link me to it?
I have a 93 marathon that I just bought. It had been sitting for a long time and I wasn't sure if it even worked at all. I bought new batteries for it and found that it does work...until it gets off of the pavement and onto the grass. It just almost dies. I have no manual and know very little about these. I am mechanically knowledgeable and can use a multi-meter. The cables are not in the best shape and some are even WAY too long.

Any advice/help is appreciated!
