I've read your post and I would bet your problem is that you installed the bearings in the case instead of on the crank first. I think the bearings are not seated against the crank causing it to load the bearings. The shims go on the double bearing side but you may not need them. They would load the bearings if the distance between the engine housing bore's are not in specs ie. make the bearings tighter.

UPDATE: put the shims on the flywheel side because I didn't want to hassle with the double bearing side...shouldn't make a difference as they are just there for endplay. Also pressed the bearings with a press to seat them better. Everything seems better!

mine didnt have shims, but then again its been apart at least once in its life before I got it. oddly I was able to pull the old bearings off the old crank by hand (one took a little help by screwdrivers) . did have to press the new bearings on.
