Default Vanguard

What should the compression be on a stock 16 HP Vanguard? its the 303447 series? May have got hosed by a guy on e-baY. Havent looked at valve clearances yet

valve set .004-.006.......

the manual doesnt give an psi.. it says if the difference is greater then 25% the lower one has loss of compression...

If motor has a stock cam you can not trust compression reading as it has a decompressor. Thats why briggs dosen't give psi

Another way you can get an idea is look at the blowby coming out of the crank case, often via hose that goes back into the air cleaner. Worn engines will blow a lot out of there when they get hot, mine even smokes (there but not out exhaust) but nothing when its cold, and its tired (stock G9) Also you can back the valve lash off to disable the comp release, I usually just turn it by hand and feel the compression leakage....how fast does it leak out and turn over TDC if you hold pressure on it. It takes a while for a new engine and seconds for a worn out one.
