Re: Clone valve rattle
They wont run for long without guide plates, if there wasnt a guide plate, the rockers would just slip off the valve.
The clone engines are inherently noisy...bottom line. |

Re: Clone valve rattle
I think mine is barely louder than the stock engine, if you don't count the exhaust. The muffler is quiet at 1/4 throttle and less. No noises....yet.

Re: Clone valve rattle
i adjusted the lash again to where there is just very lil play,,less than .004 as thats the smallest feeler gauge i had..no more rattle near as bad now
i do have p.rod guide plate in place also.. most of the noise i think i was hearing was the input shaft bearings grinding kinda loud..when i took the belt off and ran engine it sounded very good.. now to dissasemble the entire rear after just gettin it in..then dissasemble the entire rear end to replace bearings.. if anyon has a link to pics of the insides of a ezgo gas diff id love to see some pics..not diagrams, just clear pics. need to no if theres a certain way i need to tear the diff apart so it dont fall apart..first time in there for me |

Re: Clone valve rattle
Obviously an ancient thread but relevant to an issue I have.
My 13 HP clone suddenly shut itself off one day. Turned out the nuts had loosened off so much the tappets weren't even pushing the pushrods anymore. It had been running great right up till it suddenly wasn't. No fuss no muss. It just quietly quit. The nuts didn't loosen off instantaneously so I was amazed it been running at all, let alone purring like it had been before it shut off. I had a spare engine so I swapped it in and haven't done anything about the problem yet. I need another engine though so I'm gonna tackle it now. Anybody got a pic of the guide plates? I didn't see any when I pulled the valve cover. Just the tappets and push rods. I bought the engine new so nobody else had it apart before after it left the factory. |

Re: Clone valve rattle
A way to solve that issue is to switch to the champion type shaft rocker arms from Vegascarts. That eliminates the guide plate completely. The stud rockers let the push rods wear against the guide plate and it ovals out and allows the push to move around causing excessive lash. You do need to add longer push rods to use these units. All 3 of my generators have this mod. For my cart I spent the Xtra $'s for the high ratio NRracing shaft mount units. With the shaft mounted rockers really stays intact.

Re: Clone valve rattle
Rather not spend anything on it if I can avoid it. I have too many projects draining my fun fund as it is.
I re-adjusted the lash again yesterday and went with 5 thou on the exhaust and 3 on the intake but it still won't start. If I choke it it will sputter with a snappish sound a few times but that's it. Has very good spark, it's getting fuel and it feels like it has enough compression to run but it only shows about 5 PSI on my compression tester. I rolled the engine over with the starter and also rotated it backwards by hand. I also tested the tester with my air compressor and it matched what the huffer gauge said so I know it works. I have a new 420cc clone I decided I'm gonna use for the Club Car instead but I wanna figure out why the engine I have on it now (for test fitting purposes) won't run. I have an EZGO cart that's (real) Honda powered and the clone I'm working on now will be a spare engine for both carts. If I can get it to go I mean. It moves like it should but it's like the intake valve is at least partially open on the compression stroke. But the tappet can be jiggled a bit at that point so I'm wondering if it's a bent or damaged valve. Will have to buy a new head gasket so I can have a look. I have two 5.0 Ford engines sitting on stands. I just finished up one of them. Just have to put a carb on it and it's ready to go. It's somewhat tempting lol. |
