Default G1 engine is a J42

I've heard of the low compression engine that Yamaha produced for G1's ... How can I identify if I have one by the engine number

I think it is the 1982. Look up the serial, see the serial locator post above in stickies, I think yamaha still has a site for it also.

I think the 1982 is the goofy engine year, search it here and you will find it. You will find parts are different for that year. You need the serial to find the year. http://www.everythingcarts.com/what-...golf-cart.aspx

IIRC the rest of the years the engine is the same pretty much, that year it was different and not that good. They are all 6:1 compression or something, they did that so GC could use substandard fuel that was cheaper.

1982, J17 engine. The bottom end is the same for all. The 82 had a differant cylinder/reed assy/carb and muffler.

Cool ... The guide says mine is a 1981 .... Guess the engine serial number really doesn't say to much.

Now I just need to get it started and running .... Lol

I have a G1 with engine serial j17002604 looking like the odd ball 82 year with the lower compression. Could you tell me what the compression specs would be on this engine? Compression check reveals 90 psi. I found the ratio in the manual but not a psi spec

thanks
mike

If the bottom end is the same, can we then replace the upper part with other years' model?
