82 G1 Gov Bypass with Ball Joint Linkage
I didn't think this version of linkage was going to be an easy Gov Bypass but then the lightbulb hit me right square in the eyes, As the pics show my connecting rod from governor arm to carb had a ball joint at each end. I got great advice on here to simply connect the throttle cable directly to the carb but the cable has a clevis/pin end and the butterfly lever on the carb has a ball rather then a hole, I really wasn't in the mood to grind off the ball and drill a hole. So.......
I removed the linkage rod along with the cable and it's mount, Found a perfectly placed hole in the fan shroud to reinstall the cable mount. Then the Mcguyver part (I'm so proud of lol) was to re-use the ball joint at the carb lever by simply screwing in a thumb screw and drilling a hole in it to accept the clevis pin in the cable end, Uh-huh Uh-huh. Thank you very much.... 20 minutes later I'm back on the road. I will say I was a bit disappointed in the top end gain (from 12 to 17mph) but it's a lot torquier all the way through to top speed, Didn't even have to adjust the cable at the pedal. Just a slight adjustment at the mount, It doesn't backfire and goes to full open and close just fine. |

Nice ingenuity there. I hate to be a killjoy but are you sure there isn't something else going on with your cart? 17 ungoverned is way too slow. My cart is still governed and it goes 16 -17.

Re: 82 G1 Gov Bypass with Ball Joint Linkage
Thanks.... Yeah I'm not sure if something else is going on or not as this is my first Yamaha and have only had it since late last year, I know it's a lot slower than my 85 Ezgo when I bypassed it. That one screams and does 20mph by gps...
I bought this one from the wife of a buddy that died, She needed the money and I can always use a spare. Then when reading up on it I realized it's the de-tuned low compression undesirable year Yamaha put out, Kinda figured that might be why it's so slow?? I do have a portable wireless test tach but I haven't checked the wfo rpm yet, I would guess by the sound of it it's only in the low 4000ish range. In fact I haven't checked out anything on it yet, Probably ought to see what the compression is for starters |

Re: 82 G1 Gov Bypass with Ball Joint Linkage
The cylinder and other stuff was choked down in '82. I don't know how much it did I was never able to compare them. I had one that did over 30mph all stock but for a few mods here and there, ok all stock appearing it was. I advanced the timing, worked the clutches, decked the head, stuff like that. That must have been about a 86 year cart.

Re: 82 G1 Gov Bypass with Ball Joint Linkage
The big lever is still there but I removed everything from it including the spring. ..The throttle cable from the pedal now goes directly to the carb/butterfly lever. I eliminated the linkage from the diff Gov lever to the carb. Check out the second pic closely and you can see the lever is now connected to nothing

But like I said I haven't done anything to it yet, I need to start with a compression test to see what I've got, Guess I could advance the timing a bit now to see what happens. |
