Heavy Battery Gasing, One Battery Only.
I have a Yamaha drive with four 12-volt batteries. The batteries are only about six months old and seem to give good range.
I was listening to the gurgle while charging the batteries and popped a cap to check the degree of gassing. The battery nearest the negative cable was gassing heavily in all six cells, but none of the other batteries appeared to be gassing much at all. Is it normal for only the battery nearest the negative cable to gas more than other batteries in a series pak? Thanks Tom T |

maybe that one is at a higher state of charge than the others

Re: Heavy Battery Gasing, One Battery Only.
While I don't know what could be the issue or if there is an issue; but what I would try is moving that battery around to different positions and watch to see if it continues to gas heavy. If it does I would say that one battery may have issues. In the mean time I'd also check it out with a meter to see if all cells are putting out the same voltage and to compare overall battery voltage with the others. It would also be a good thing to check the specific gravity of the acid in your batteries to get an overall better picture of what's going on.

Thanks for responding. Don't know. Maybe a check of S.G. prior to charging would give a clue. Just seems odd that it is the battery nearest the negative lead.

Thanks Teecro. I was thinking the same thing. Move the battery and see if it's a battery issue or a position issue.

Little tricks like this make for very easy trouble shooting.... Personally I'd be rather suspect of that one battery so I'd be sure to try it in the 1 position and either the 2 or 3 position.

Re: Heavy Battery Gasing, One Battery Only.
I figured I would move it from the 1 position to the 4 position and see what the old 4 does. If it gasses heavily, I'll look for other problems. It not, then the battery will get close attention.

Re: Heavy Battery Gasing, One Battery Only.
All the cells checked out at a nice 12.75 specific gravity and were even from cell to cell. I've relocated the gassing battery from position 1 (negative lead) to position 2. I'll use the cart in the morning and will be able to run a charge cycle and check the battery for gassing in its new position.

I've always replaced batteries that started this just for peace of mind

Batteries in series don't care where they are in the chain. Moving them is a waste of effort.
