Got my voltmeter today and I just put each of the leads on the pos/neg of the battery pack and I got sparks. I'm guessing I need to get a different meter even though it's reading correctly.

Like welding Sparks? Whose meter? If it's a eBay/Amazon special, your guess is as good as anyone else on Earth's guess.

No, real small sparks. Yea from Amazon, made in China.

Does it spark every time you connect it, or just the first time? Try repeatedly connecting/disconnecting/connecting and see if the first is worse. If you have a DMM, check the current draw. If it's fairly small, you could decide to keep it, but I'd place an inline switch.

I always like to put everything on a fuse.

Me too. If the current draw is excessive, could drain battery over time, yet not blow a fuse. My radio sparks, but I have it fused and all accessories are killed by my key-switch.

Though we're talking apples and oranges, I'd bet my two 55 watt headlights would spark quite a bit, at nearly 10 amps.

Are you talking about a hand held DVM or a gauge intended to be mounted on a cart?

I bought the DVM from ScottyB for my 36v TXT. I got an AGM type automotive inline fuse holder from my local auto store. Not sure what size fuse I used but probably something in the 2 - 5 amp range. It has been working great for 5 years. All you are looking for is dead short protection.
