Default 48v to 12v reducer

Has anyone tried with any luck the cheap 48vdc to 12vdc 120watt voltage reducers that are on eBay and other sites? They are anywhere from $12-$25. I was wanting to use this for my lights on my DS so they will be brighter. When I got the cart it was connected to one 8v battery and was really not so bright. I know that connecting to 16v would shorten the bulb life. Any thoughts on this?

Save yourself the trouble and get one from scottyb at http://www.cartsunlimited.net/12v-reducers.html He's reasonably priced, stands behind what he sells and is available to answer questions.

I have one on mine (a 30A unit) and it is fine but you must accept that they are pretty hit-and-miss. They may work perfectly, maybe not at all or maybe for only a short while. Also it is best to get a 48V relay as well when you hook them up so that you can control them through the key or a separate switch, so that adds to their cost.

If you want certainty and warranty then do like the others say and get one from Scotty. Another advantage of getting that one is that it has a trigger wire so it can be connected through the key switch without having to get a relay and wire it separately.

Also the unit you are referring to is only 10A so it will be running harder to supply the amperage you need for your lights (and other accessories that you will be tempted to add once you have the reducer). I would suggest that you get a unit that is at least 20A.

i went with the 30 amp ones for the work carts due to needing to use an air pump
our lights are all leds now so amps are low

This is the circuit diagram I drew up for my installation (I have a separate switch as well as going through the key so I can switch it off when the key is on but it will also go off with the key even if that switch is on)...

yawood, I like that setup.
You can sneak up on someone or prey and with a switch flip blast them with lights and a sub!

Thanks for the replies. Now this opens up another set of questions. I have looked for toggle switches with no luck finding one that can handle both 48vdc and 20 amps. Most heavy duty switches can handle the 20 amps but are only rated for 12 volts. I wish I had ordered the one you were telling me about but it is too late. Any suggestions on where I can get a toggle switch for this set-up so this unit don't drain the batteries when not in use?
