Default Battery Upgrade?

I rescued up a EZGo cart from the recycler last week. It doesn't have batteries and I will need to pick some up in the next few days to check everything out. First, Is there a way to just test the motor to make sure its operable before buying batteries?
Second, I believe its a 36v cart. I've read lots of posts on upgrading to 48v for increased speed etc. Is there a adjustment to the motor that has to be made or just the added voltage from the batteries provide the power?
If so, what batteries did you get? size, brand etc?

Sorry if dumb ? I'm obviously a newb.
Thx

Welcome to BGW
Use the attached chart to determine the drive system type. The last to digits of the manufacture code is the yr it was made (not the serial #)

If you have access to another cart you can use jumper cables to test your cart to see if it will run. Of course you need to be very careful when doing this because 36V will make a pretty good firework show if you cross up the pos and neg. I just know, trust me
