I don't know what Yurtle is smoking, but I both want some and am scared of it at the same time!

To the OP, have you tried not charging the batteries fully? If the issue is too much regen causing the batteries to reach max, then a battery charged to 90% ought to have a better go of it. And charging to 90% vs 100% will give your battery more cycles.

I don't know how a very expensive capacitor would help, if it keeps the controller running, it will continue to run Regen brake against an ineffective load and likely go over-voltage very quickly regardless if the batteries are present.

If those batteries really just go open circuit that easy, the only possible work around would be to get a new Controller that You can program to work around the issue:
Disable Regen brake for over-charging current.
Disable HPD for over-driving current.
That way the Controller will recover if power is temporarily removed.
I read elsewhere the regen braking system ALSO has a high-voltage cutoff.

While that MIGHT help, I use the stock EZGO 2005 charger. I don't see any adjustments to be made.

To borrow a phrase, size matters!

Yes, that is a AA battery, next to that 150 Farad MaxWell BoostCap UltraCapacitor, next to that AntiTank Laser module. This picture shows parts for a prototype I built and tested 3 years ago, while I was working in DC. I had to order these parts through the Pentagon. Testing is finished, and that package that fits in the palm of my hand would blast holes through 3" plate steel in a fraction of a second, spraying the interior with molten steel. Now they occupy space on my shelf. The UltraCap is charged, then discharged into the laser module. The actual laser pulse output is classified, but it is many kilowatts. That little block of gold weighs about 5 pounds to dissipate the heat quickly from the array of laser dies contained within. If you were to hit a person with that laser, they would literally explode as the water in their body at the point of impact instantly flashes to steam.

UltraCaps can hold a huge power density with what is available today. The military buys up most of the production of the compact UltraCaps however.

I actually worked behind the scenes on that one, and the prequel before it. I built lasers for the movies that were used as weapons beams. I had to travel to California to set up the beamshots, which were recorded in HD, then they were used as references for the special effects computers. A real laser beam image as a reference allows the digital versions to appear more realistic. I still have all of the original lasers that were built and used for the movies, as the law does not allow me to transfer ownership.

Funny, I also have a laser I don't even play with, but it's only double digits wattage. It should cut soup cans, and it's beam is invisible, so the last thing you will ever see before you go blind is "nothing out of the ordinary".
