81 EzGO Robins 244cc Backfiring
I finally have this engine running but it wont idle and seems to backfire
It starts easily, but while driving seems to jerk as if it is out of fuel then will pick back up. Carb was cleaned, spark plug checked ,fuel pump good etc. Anyone have similar issue that may be able to point me in right direction |

Re: 81 EzGO Robins 244cc Backfiring
First off there is no "idle" these things are either running or not.
Since you took the carb off I am assuming that the spring between the throttle lever and throttle cable stop is either out of adjustment or gone. If it is there loosen the cable stop, compress the spring, tighten the cable stop and most of your issues will go away. The spring keeps the throttle closed until you have pushed the pedal far enough away from the microswitch operated by the pedal and then allows the throttle to open and the cart to run. Without the spring in place the throttle begins to open immeditely so when you are trying to run at low speed what you are actually doing is turning the microswitch on and off. The backfire comes from the throttle being sightly open and allowing fuel/air to continue to be sucked into cylinder which once you put your foot back to it the cart fires regardless of piston position and ..... backfire. Backfires can lead to blown fuel pump diaphragms, pushed out crank seals and dogs that will no longer ride with you. If you don't have the spring a light duty 1/4" diameter x 3/4" long compression spring at your local hardware store will suffice. Good luck, you will find a picture in my profile of the spring location but it is not in the compressed position (yet) I was just showing where the spring goes. |

Yeah that spring usually comes up missing cause no one knows what it does. Every 2 stroker I have come in contact with seems to be missing that spring.

and as a slight aside the spring being missing means that the governor cannot work properly. If it has been lashed up by someone who didn't know what they were doing then that too could cause surging issues.
