Steel wheels vs Aluminum wheels
My cart had stock wheels with22x11x8 strykers.
Last year I bought some 12" black steel spoke wheels with 23" tires(steel belted radials from carlisle. I am now second guessing that maybe I should have spent a little extra on the aluminum wheels because of weight. What is more significant for battery capacity, weight of the wheel/tire or circumfrance of the tire? and any body know the weight difference in a similar aluminum vs steel wheels? |

Re: Steel wheels vs Aluminum wheels
I have aluminum wheels (bc I got a killer deal) and a friend has steel. There MAY BE a 5-8 lb weight difference between the two. Even if you say 10lbs, that still only adds 40 additional lbs. You will not notice a difference +/- 40LBS. However, it does take A LOT more energy to turn larger tires. You will notice a difference in run time +/- tire size.

Re: Steel wheels vs Aluminum wheels
The heavier a tire & wheel combo is the more energy it takes to turn it and to stop it.

Re: Steel wheels vs Aluminum wheels
Yes, it does take more energy to stop and spin heaver tires and wheels. But, IMO the energy usage is not noticeable enough to buy a new set of aluminum wheels. The money spent to performance gained is not there. My friend that has steel wheels borrowed my setup to test the tires I had. I ran with his steel wheels and could not tell a difference in stopping, run time, or acceleration. Just my tested two cents….

Re: Steel wheels vs Aluminum wheels
Honestly,With the size wheels you are talking about,I'd dare to say the difference is probably closer to 15-20 lbs.The steel wheels are fairly light(remember we are talking a lite-weigth stamped wheel.)and the Aluminum wheels are cast or spun.In some cases the Aluminum wheels will be heavier.Overall i wouldn't worry about iteither way,the difference is so minimal,it would be like whether or not you carried a 12-pack on the cart or a (can't believe i will utter these words!) Set of golf-clubs.
