Sorry about that folks, I once worked as a tech writer of process manuals for engineers and equipment operators. Maybe I should have numbered each step, or maybe written the procedure with crayons? I promise to do better next time, just give me four more years to get it right!>>>>>> Okay?

Just kidding!?
BTY The diagram is exactly what it should be. Looking from the top down (IMHO)

Taykol,The reason for the paint is so that noone has a brain-fart on which part of the tread they used as a reference from front to back.It just eliminates chasing your tail.Yes measuring from the tread works, but you have to get it right on both measurements,no guessing.

Use the big red ones (Folgers Classic Roast 64 oz. size) raises the measureing rod to about the middle of the tire.

Once the mark is made in front and back of tire. Are you just measuring tire to tire or is there another point of reference?

Just from tire to tire. That gives you the Toe-In/Out.

After you get your toe-in correct you can then play with centering the steering box And your steering wheel

I know, I know. One thing at a time

couldn't you just spin the tire and use some kids chalk to make the line? no painting and re-making a line...

You can, its' just another way of doing it.Scribing the line in the paint makes an unmistakable line,no chance of it wiping off while you make adjustments and bump into a tire.
