i guess i should not of said damage ... but to use only 1.19v before recharging seems ridiculous

The less you discharge them between charges the longer they will last IF your charger does a good job of charging. (Not all do!)

Thanks all, good info. I look forward to reading the links.

How do I know when I've gotten to 80% w/o a dash meter. I have a handheld meter...so totally dumb question...I could hand test and I'd be looking for 38.4 (80% of 48v) by placing one end at the start of the four batteries and the other at the end? True and the right number?

Actually 80% State of charge for a 48v system is 48.99v, check this chart out.
