key switch problem

Hey just wondering if anyone can answer this one. I can drive my cart with the key switch in all positions. (ACC, OFF, ON & Start(momentary)) Any idea what is wrong? Bad key switch maybe?

The keyswitch has been wired around.

will 'jumping out ' the switch hurt anything ?? I have a 91 wired direct , switch went bad and I just wired it direct till I could get ' around to replacing ' it , and we all know the end of that story . Question is is / could it do any damage ??

If the cart runs in the OFF position then the keyswitch has been wired out of the circuit so "jumping out" won't do anything.

Without looking at your schematic, on mine, the 2000 TXT, the circut that allows the cart to run goes through three contacts:

1) MS1 switch (FNR lever RUN microswitch)
2) keyswitch
3) ITS throttle switch (tied to accelerator plunger in the throttle box)

On my original cart wiring, there is no fuse in that circuit. Without the keyswitch the above circuit the cart can be operated anytime the accelerator petal is pressed and the FNR is in gear. In my book, I would look into getting it replaced - it's under $20 bucks and easy to change out.

As for running the cart now, primary concern is with HOW the internals of the switch failed. If the failure is due to the wires to/from the switch shorting out, then there is the danger of those going to electrical negative/ground and producing LARGE VOLUMES of smoke, potentially enough to consume the cart and the surrounding area (burn it to the ground).

If you are unsure of exactly what is shorted and the relative safety of how this short may fail next, the conservative thing to do is disconnect the batteries until it is repaired.
