This last pic, you can see where the scaring on the metal gear lined up with the hot spot on the orange plastic gear.

Looks like a lot of scratches on what I can see of that piston. Can you rotatethe engine to see if you can expose more of the piston?

Based on the pictures so far, I think you need to start taking it apart to determine exactly what is worn out or damaged.

pop off the rod cap,with the amount of vertical scratches on the piston skirt,that engine was run with low or very dirty oil for a long time. I betcha the rod is horribly scored.

The crank is blue from heat. Add that to the scratched up pistons.... rebuild time. Measure the crane carefully, with that color almost definitely needs to be cut.

Typically gaskets, rings, piston, bearings. But in your case it looks like more is going to be needed.
