Default 2001 TXT, no compression? rings?

Hello,

I have a 2001 TXT I purchased about 2 months ago, and it has been running great until lately.

First signs of trouble were that it would take longer to start, I would have to hold the pedal for 20 seconds before it would fire.

Then it got up to about a minute that I would have to hold the pedal.

Once it was warm, it was perfectly fine, until the next day. I'd have to hold the pedal for another length of time.

Well now it just flat out doesn't run. My theory is that the rings are worn, because it seems to be getting gas and spark, and I can turn the engine over by hand by pulling the belts.

Would worn rings cause the golf cart to take longer to start for a while until they finally gave out?

Assuming it's the rings, can somebody please help me find a set online, I have been looking and can't figure out which set is correct, and they seem awfully expensive.

Thanks!

the next thing to do is pull the plugs and put in a small amount of oil and recheck the compression,, if it goes up then the rings are bad,,, if compression doesn't go up then the valves are suspects.
we are talking about a 4 cycle eng are we not?

Check first if your spark plugs need to be replaced.

Paulmess, I have had exactly the same symptoms including the taking longer and longer to sart scenario. It transpired that the clutch was no longer tight on the crankshaft so it gave the illusion of starting but the engine was not turning. To check for this pull out a plug and see if it is firing. If it isn't then this may well be your issue.
Good luck
Dave

What are the compression readings of the cylinders?
Have you checked your valve clearances yet?
You need to determine this before you tear into it possibly for the wrong reason.
If you need parts any of our sponsors are great to deal with.
I just did mine and Scotty at Cartsunlimited.com supplied my parts.

Thanks for the advice everybody!

I changed the plugs the other day and it didn't make a difference, but just now I added a little oil to the cylinders and it started right up!

So this means I need new rings?

It's a 2001 TXT 4 cycle engine, I THINK it's 295cc, can anybody confirm that? When I look for rings there are so many options that I'm not sure which one is correct.

Still do a compression test.

Have you adjusted your valves yet? Mine was doing the same thing and a simple adjustment cured it.

I second that valve adjustment recommendation. My compression went from 110 to 180psi after I adjusted the valves.
