Clutches for dummies.....
I am trying to fix a small dune buggy. It has a 6hp single cylinder 4/c gas engine with what looks like typical golf cart drive clutch and driven clutch. The driven clutch turns a jackshaft which powers both wheels (solid axle). Every once in a while one of (or both, I can't tell yet) the clutches will not release when the buggy slows for a stop. This makes the buggy lurch and difficult to stop as well as start again. I have to jerk the whole buggy back and forth to free up the clutches. Is this a common problem with this CVT drivetrain? Is there a lube point I don't know about? Or, is one of the clutches wearing out?
I'm a sparky guy, so go easy on me...... |

I'll be your Huckleberry!!
Sounds like a good cleaning of the drive clutch is in order Gorno. The driven just reacts to the weights in the drive clutch but both need to be clean and moving. |

Re: Clutches for dummies.....
When you say cleaning, is this cleaning the angled surfaces of the clutches (faces)? Or, are we talking about disassembling them? Can I do this ON THE VEHICLE? If these clutches are pressed-on to the shafts I have no options for removal (not MY vehicle, it's a long story...). BTW, the belt looks fine to me.

Re: Clutches for dummies.....
Roll it forward or backwards to remove the belt from the driven clutch, then drive clutch.
Make sure the movable side of the drive clutch slides freely in and out. Not sure what brand clutches they are running but the drive clutch could be a free sliding (in and out) clutch like Yamaha or a spring loaded clutch like Ezgo that is held open but can still be pushed in with little effort and it could even have a zerk fitting somewhere. |

Re: Clutches for dummies.....
I'm thinking the clutch is most likely like the one Dooms posted rather than the cart clutches we are accustom to dealing with.
Just another thought, how is the idle on the motor? Once they warm up sometimes they idle a little higher and may be engaging the primary? Just a thought...... |
