does it continue cranking when it's not firing? I'm picturing you stepping the gas pedal to the floor, it fires at first then just cranking.. left off the gas and it fires for a second?

Generally it is a grounding issue. I would remove all the grounds (including the little ones on the plate that the ignitor is mounted on) and clean them down to bare metal.

I had this same problem on my 89. Spark when you press and let off the pedal. Turned out the pulsar was unplugged from the ignitor. If yours is plugged in, you may have a bad pulsar.
