I always try to estimate what it will cost to fix or repair. Evaluate what it might be worth after its fixed. If it will be worth more, than what it costs you to build it, then what you learn mechanically, is free!
In other words, if you can sell it for more than you have in it,(even if the profit is a small amount) then what you learn, and enjoy, in the process no matter how long it takes you is good. Your parents may not be comfortable with you loosing money in the venture. (Putting money into something, that you can't get your money back out of). Big money here!

Just re read, $400. for a very old (crashed) car that doesn't run, sounds like way to much! Offer $150. and walk away,he will call you back.
Personally, I'd hold out for a 4 stroke.

This.

If you can fix stuff that is cool, you just have to weigh the deal. If you are going to fix it then you get it for cheap or let some other sucker buy it. They are a great cart but pretty old, that means a lot of stuff may need repair in particular if it don't run. They need a tight bore to run right, and while a bored cylinder is pretty cheap for them there are the clutches and everything else too. A lot of people run them until they die and don't fix a thing. If you pay more then you should not have to fix much of anything, if you see what I am saying. Personally I think prices on G1 are quite high maybe people never check the year on them? They are ancient really, many people don't like stinky loud 2 strokes though they are fine for our use. Many campgrounds don't even want gas carts anymore. So if you sell it your buyers will be limited. I know a guy with one in great shape and its about the only one I've ever seen. I had 60 of them I took care of for years, back then they were under 5yr old, most I see today are wrecks the front end is all ragged out they don't steer right, no power, etc. I would offer 150 or 200 depending on what I saw, see what he says. Just keep saying it does not run you can't pay much for it as you don't know condition of anything when its not running.

I believe you have gotten good information here, the owner wants 400 but its not really worth it as it doesn't run. You can explain that the carb needs to be played with because of worn seals, if the clutches have not been replaced most likely they are well worn also. Look at the front tires, if they are leaning you will need new king pins and bushings. This cart will be a challange but thats what you wanted. I don't mind driving around in a 27 year old cart all the while knowing its in top shape and performing like new. If you are looking to make money on a cart, buy a newer model it will be easier to sell.

Our R/C club just bought a 1979 G1 and it is in good running condition for $400.00. Just needed to have a few maintenance type items (plugs & air cleaner) done. I agree with the other guys, $400 is just too much for that cart.

This is starting to sound like a better deal. Check the clutches when you see it.
