yamaha g2 secondary clutch
hey guys got a yamaha g2 golf cart my question is a while back i took my secondary apart to experiment with different springs. Needless to say when i put it back together with the stock spring back and take it for a ride i watched the secondary and as soon as i hit the gas the plates open and the belt goes to top speed mode. My question is when i had the spring out i noticed theres pegs on the end that go in holes on the clutch halfs. am i suppose to spin the halfs before there locked on the shaft to create tension in the spring?

Re: yamaha g2 secondary clutch
Yes, but if the spring is stock, you need an aftermarket high performance spring and spacer to with your tall tires! Huge improvement!!

Re: yamaha g2 secondary clutch
Most people use Plowmans spring or CPP. I used a concierge spring (factory Yamaha). If you use the concierge spring, use B-3 for the tangs on the spring. Plowmans and CPP springs won't have the tangs.
I did a little wright up in the "G 8 Club" on page 457, using the concierge spring, if you want more info and pictures on the install. |

Re: yamaha g2 secondary clutch
The twist on the spring is preload, you should have 60 degrees I think stock. More will make it stay at high rpm all the time, less will make it shift out at part throttle to low rpm. It will run about the same full throttle either way. I use the stock spring and with a few mods I pulled boats out of a lake and rode tons of trails with it. Now I have a clone in it with more power but not had time to trail ride yet. It spins the tires and pulls the front tires off the ground, so not really worried about it. The different holes allow you to tune the preload better, they give different degrees of rotation. You might be able to look closely at them and spot wear marks to find where it was set at, but not a big deal. You can try it and adjust it, it comes apart easy when it has not been on there long.
What did I do, I ground my ramps down a little on a jig on the outer part. That helps it rev more at low speeds. I also put the spring in a vice and pulled it longer, figure it was old and tired anyway. I meant to buy the yamaha HD spring mentioned above but didn't get to it. I also set the tension cable with a gps for the best takeoff power. I also plan to cut my secondary sheave that gives a lower 'first' gear. I put a cut one on another cart it worked really well. I do plan to get a new primary clutch soon as mine is very thin. The primary is where performance is at. I don't like the secondary springs they were not made for that. When I worked on sleds we never did much to the secondary, that was mostly for how it shifts at speed and had little to do with power. The springs do work, are hard to put in, but up to you. |

Re: yamaha g2 secondary clutch
IIRC you wind it to the first ramp stock. If you move the spring so its on a ramp and wind it to the next one (so like a ramp and a half), then it will stay at higher rpm all the time. When you drive 1/4 throttle it will be revving more. It makes it snappier for sure, it does not have to rev as much when you floor it because it is half way there already. But it makes noise and takes gas. It may help cooling. I have mine wound just a little more than stock because the clone carb stumbles at low rpm so it helps it not do that. If you wind it really tight it just stays at full rpm like you have it floored, stays there all the time you are moving fast enough.
