48v cart with 72v battery system tap off to run 48v
I have 48v club cart. I want to run 72v battery system using 12v battery for future upgrades.
I have a 72v charger already. Can I tap off the fourth battery so I can feed the cart with 48v? I will charger at 72v. I will be switching controller and motor to 72v. Next year or when I get cash!!! |

Re: 48v cart with 72v battery system tap off to run 48v
You are probably going to shorten the batterys life becuause you are not going to get an equal charge across all the batteries because all the batteries are not discharging at the same rate.

You are gonna kill those batteries and prolly caused a fire in the process
The batteries not used by your motor will get over-charged and blow up. Don't do it, unless someone smarter than me can prove me wrong. |

Re: 48v cart with 72v battery system tap off to run 48v
Quote:
The 72v charger "assumes" that all batteries in the pack were discharged at similar rates, allowing similar charge rates. HOWEVER, if the 2 additional batteries are used for lights and radio, and not for the motor they are being discharged at different rates (Deeper or lighter discharges than the batteries for the motor) The charger will overcharge some batteries (that were discharged less), and undercharge some batteries (That were discharged more)... none of the above is a good scenario for any of your batteries. The 72v charger "doesn't care" how it gets to 72v, as long as it gets there.. example = 4 batteries charged to 11.5 volts and 2 batteries charged to 13 volts. Do as you wish, it's your own cart, but I think you are asking for a lot of trouble that you don't want. In theory will it work? It might. How long will it work before a major issue occurs? No one knows, but I don't think you want a "major issue" unless you really hate your golf cart, shed, and home and wish to burn it down. I second SteveC by saying don't do it unless someone smarter than me can prove me wrong. |
