Default Protech Charger

I am new to the whole golf cart thing so I need some advice. My charger just took a dump, it was an old lestronic and needs a new transformer.

Money is tight and spending $350-400 on a new charger isn't my idea of fun. How are these Protech-C onboard chargers? Do they charge slower than the bigger "offboard" chargers? What is the difference?

If I buy a 36v charger will I be happy? Seems I can get the 36v 16amp charger for $180.
