Default Re: Battery charging Winter Texan away several months

Just re-read the instruction manual for the charger, I made a mistake it is every 14 days not 7 days as I originally said

Quote:
• Long-Term Storage Charge
IQ System, PowerDrive, and Precedent vehicles with PowerDrive chargers are designed to be left con-
nected with AC power to the charger during off-season or long-term storage. The onboard computer
will automatically activate the charger every 15 days. To return the vehicle to service, unplug the
charger DC cord, wait 15 seconds for the computer to reset, and plug the charger back in. See follow-
ing WARNING. This will ensure the batteries are at their optimum charge prior to returning the vehicle
to service.
ý WARNING
• The charger plug must be pulled slowly from the receptacle. Jerking or pulling the DC cord
out quickly could cause arcing and burning that could damage the plug and receptacle and
could cause batteries to explode.

We spend the winter is southwest Florida. There are probably 100 club cars in the development. Most just walk away from them in the summer. Some disconnect one or both of the battery cables. My neighbor left his cart plugged in all last summer to keep his new 8 volt interstate batteries topped off. He has the factory Club Car charger. No one checked the water levels. The plates were exposed in all 24 cells when he got back after 7 months. This year he is going to pull the plus and minus battery cables and walk away.

Too bad I didn't see this post before I left, we are on our way home now, and I left it plugged in.

Might have to reconsider, There is still someone there who might be able to turn the breaker off for me....hmmmm.

Thanks for the post

Well folks, back home to snowy Canada. Thanks for all your input.

I have left the charger plugged in, and have arranged for someone to check the water levels every two months for six months until my friend arrives back in the park, then he will check it, make sure it gets used and charged.

I will report back in 6 months or so, about how this went for me.

How about leaving it plugged in to a digital timer set to come on once a week. Just a thought

The Powerdrive chargers automatically top off the batteries every 14 days.
If they are left plugged in...

Yes, which is why I decided to leave it plugged in...it is designed for that and Trojan batteries said it is a good idea.

The question is the water level..which I will find out about.

Yep, I think you did the right thing.
Chuck was talking about putting a timer on the charger, but the charger itself already has its own timer built in to it.
