88 Ezgo Gas Marathon GX444 2-cycle
Just picked up a 88 Marathon. Havent really had a lot of time to mess wth it yet, but I have a couple questions. One it will run when i push the gas peddle but not move. I can roll it in neutral and the pulley moves when i do it. My second question, I was reading this is a 2 cycle engine. Does that mean i have to use mixed gas for it? thx

Re: 88 Ezgo Gas Marathon GX444 2-cycle
Is the drive belt connected? There should be 2 belts, one from the starter to the drive clutch (motor clutch), and a big one from the drive clutch to the driven clutch (rear end clutch).
This is a two stroke cart and yes, it runs on mixed fuel. It depends on whether or not your oil pump and reservoir is hooked up as to whether or not you'll need to premix yourself. I and many others recommend removing the oil injection anyhow and simply premixing your fuel at 128:1, which is 1 oz. per gallon. If there is any way you could post a picture of the engine bay area, that would be great and we could know exactly what we're dealing with and help you out just a little more. |

Re: 88 Ezgo Gas Marathon GX444 2-cycle
First, congrats on owning the most powerful 2-stroke EZGO - the 1988 was a special year where they had the "HO" version of the 2pg engine. On the upside, the differenceis quite noticeable vs any other 2-stroke, the downside is that certain parts are year-specific and can be a bit of hassle to locate.
That said, are You sure the cart is actually "running" or is it just turning over - meaning can You rev it up or does it just seem to idle (because if that's the case, it's not actually running). Second, there IS no neutral on that cart, in fact the rear pulley is fixed - the engine is designed to run backwards in order to drive in reverse (cool, huh?). As to mix, it depends - take a pic of the front of the motor and post it so we can see what has been done to it prior to You owning it - a lot of guys pull the automatic oiler (mainly because after 30+ years they are VERY prone to failure) and then run 128"1 premix, if the oil injection system is intact we can easily show You how to pull it. Start with the basics, is there spark? If so, let us know and we can start by helping You diagnose the fuel system and go from there. If there is no spark, start by pulling every ground wire You can find (battery to frame, engine to frame, etc) and clean up the connectors, bolts, etc - these carts are VERY prone to just a little bit of rust and corrosion causing a "no-fire" situation. Start there as well as a pic of the engine front and we can go from there |

I'd like to add a lift and add some bigger nicer tires and wheels. I would also like to find a dump bed to put on it.

Re: 88 Ezgo Gas Marathon GX444 2-cycle
I see the oil injector, and governor are both still connected.
Battery, and electrical connections look really bad. Start with cleaning them, and checking for spark. |
