Hah! A partially successful attempt to dampen some of the engine noise. The muffler stops the pop, but everything is still loud. I realized most of the noise is coming from the vibrating muffler walls, so I put some stovepipe around the muffler and packed fiberglass insulation between. Tape over the ends to hold it in.

Did you adjust the float bowl to inlet valve? The Walbro has a float bowl so, you need the rebuild kit for a Walbro carb. The seat and valve may be worn out.

When rebuilding older small engines with float bowl carburetors I've found that the plastic floats will absorb fuel over time (10 years or more) and no longer float at the correct level. A simple replacement of the float and needle valve makes a huge difference in the starting and running performance of the engine. This is much faster and easier to do than repeatedly trying to bend the float arm that moves the needle valve to get the correct fuel level in the float bowl. The float usually needs to be purchased separately, since it's not commonly included in the rebuild kits.
