EZGO TXT 1997 Speed decrease
Good Morning Everyone,
Looking for some advice. I bought a 1997 EZGO TXT (36 Volt) with a DCS Controller. The batteries seem to be holding a charge and when fully charge and unplug they show 98% full with a battery meter. I installed a 6-inch lift and running 18's on the tires (for now) but I am seeing that when driving on grass or any bit of incline the speed decreases.I have replaced the battery cables with a 4 gauge cable. When going flat or downhill the speed increases and no issues. The cart doesn't stop at all but is very slow. When comparing with an order Club Cart 36 volt the Club Cart goes around 2 to 3 times faster than a 36 EZGO TXT. I have ordered and new solenoid and expecting it this week. Any other idea and option to try. I do not want to spend another $500 on a controller or motor. Any assistance would be appreciated. |

Yes, it was disconnected out of the changer around 5:00 PM EST and checked this morning at 6:30 AM.
Each battery was holding around 6.3V |

You will need to monitor voltage while going up the incline that slows you down. I bet your battery voltage is dropping. Also, did you mean DCS controller, or Alltrax DCX controller?

Re: EZGO TXT 1997 Speed decrease
Hi cgtech,
What is the expected voltage decrease that is expected going uphill on a 36 v? I been seeing when going slow the voltage meter shows around 22 to 26 Volts. I will do more testing this weekend after I install the solenoid. I am planning to do the following test 1. Stop before the uphill and rest for 2 minutes before driving it to see the distance and output. 2. Drive to the uphill without stopping. Speaking with some mechanical team, could this be an issue with the motor brushes? Thank you, |

Re: EZGO TXT 1997 Speed decrease
Cgtech will give you some expert knowledge when he sees this, but 22v is really low. Like, really low. I’ve read here before that a voltage drop roughly about the same voltage of 1 battery is the limit. What batteries do you have, and how old are they?

Re: EZGO TXT 1997 Speed decrease
Anything dropping below 31.5v for more than a split second under hard acceleration is bad news. You have battery problems most likely, but it could be any link in the system. Could be lame cables, weak solenoid... but I'm betting on a failing battery. Just because a battery looks like good voltage when at rest, doesn't mean it works good when under load. Will have to repeat the voltage monitoring test on each battery while driving.

Re: EZGO TXT 1997 Speed decrease
The golf cart came with US 2200 Xc2 batteries. They do not have a stamp on them.
I did put new 4 gauge cables already. I am cleaning the terminals today checking the voltage. The solenoid should be arriving today and should be installed today/ tomorrow for testing. I have reviewed that instead of replacing all the batteries an option is to replace the acid with a new WPS electrolyte pack. Any thoughts on this? Should I try this or is it a waste of time and money? Thank you again for all the help |

Re: EZGO TXT 1997 Speed decrease
I think it's a waste of money. The plates themselves wear out, and shed material that ends up at the bottom of the battery. It can't be put back. I think "rebuilt" batteries are just a slick way to sell used batteries for a higher price.

Re: EZGO TXT 1997 Speed decrease
There are "Snake-Oil" salesman in every business, Golf Cart Batteries are no exception to this rule. There is no magic pill or procedure..However if you can tolerate my humor...
You can cut the Top off of a new battery, than cut the top off of the old Battery, clean out the bottom of the old battery & swap the plate pack from the new case to the old case, put the top back on & Magic you just rebuild a battery anything is possible if you have the money & the time. However why waste either. Yes i am being quite stupid in my repair but it was just to show folks how crazy it can get to save a few dollars. BUY NEW Batteries, from the big 3, Trojan, US or Crown. Go at least 220 amphour |
