You can spray really soapy, bubbly water on the crankshaft right at the seal, then crank the motor over. If it is bad, you will see from the bubbles.
If they were installed dry, you will probably see a black soot on the crankshaft at the seals. It's easy to check the one behind the clutch.

Thanks for the advice. Not what I wanted to hear, with my luck it is the one behind the fan. I am going to get really good at pulling the motor. If it is the seals should I get new ones or just tap the old (new) ones in?

If the seals are leaking, they are bad and can't be re-used. Sorry.

You were absolutely right the oil seal behind the fan failed. Ordering new parts hopefully up and running soon! Hopefully didnt mess somethung else up.

Glad you found it.
Save yourself some misery later by changing them both out. Lube the crank and the seal lip first.

Just out of curiosity, how did you determine it failed?
