Digitron makes inductive pick-up tachs for Go-Karts,They've made them since the early 80's.There are some pretty cheap clamp-on units out there too.

Your right, the tech could have had a point and read tach. They were a good thing, I lost mine and ordered a new one (a few years ago) what I got was tach that attached to the plug wire. It works good, does diesel also, but a point and read its not. If your interested in ordering one Part # is AM10753
